Even though I've been a professional wiseass, and troublemaker since I graduated from high school, I'm not sure where I should start ranting about activism. As a musician I feel that there's a responsibility to get out there and act up, wake consciences, and try to create change (speak up your mind). Of course I know there are like this big benefit shows sponsored by a lot of transnational companies, you may know what i'm talking about, our national fundraiser "Teleton", and some other massive benefit shows organized by demigods such as Madonna or Bono. But for the most part these shows are made for being televised, during which musicians and entourages are lavished with gifts while little money is raised, making most of the world forget about the real issue, the real unpleasantness until the next big show, this being as being kicked out of a TV show "thank you, keep on going, see you around next year". This huge fest ain't what i call activism.
Us as crazy people, poets, painters or musicians, need to use our influences to rile people up so they can take control of their lives and create change, positive change in our neighborhoods. C'mon change in our society must start with the average person, but they can't create change without energy, where does it comes from? you may ask, allow me to tell you that this energy or inspiration comes from art. Get real, there will never be many Bonos in the world, or other people that makes world leaders dance. So what do we do? we must get out, speak up, work it out.
We need to help people get active. Get a nice, positive idea for change and let them know. If you're a musician, sing about it. If you're an artist, create something that inspires people. If you're a writer start writing about it. If you spend like way too many hours on the internet, blog it!. Everything starts at the grassroots level. Small ideas become humongous ideas.
In our country, like almost anywhere, the government rarely know the difference between right and wrong and most of them don't care about creating a change. They just read the polls, the surveys, and sometimes, only when things are about to blow, they react.
Sometimes it seems just so difficult to get out there and do something about these things. Call it procastrination, call it shame, call it whatever you want to call it, but that must change. It might seem that the time isn't right, or that you're going against all odds, or maybe the situation seems just fuckin hopeless. It's not. We must overcome fear. There's no time like the present. Indeed there's no time to waste.
Maybe i'm a daydreamer, maybe not. But you can't create change by just sitting back, vegetating, whining to yourself doing nothing. So less talk and more rock!
